While stalking in Pasadena a few weeks ago I stopped into the Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa to snap some pics. The Langham has long been a Pasadena institution and it is an absolutely gorgeous place to spend an afternoon or grab an evening cocktail. It is also an oft-used Pasadena filming location and celeb hang out. The Langham Hotel was originally built in 1907 and was known as the Wentworth. Never gaining much popularity under its original ownership, the property was sold to Henry E. Huntington in 1911, who hired renowned L.A. area architect Myron Hunt to renovate, expand, and improve the hotel. Three years later, in 1914, the Wentworth was reopened under its new name – the Huntington Hotel. Architect Myron Hunt is also known for designing the Rose Bowl, Occidental College, the California Institute of Technology, and Henry Huntington’s private home, which later became the museum known as the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. After Myron’s renovations, the Huntington Hotel became an overnight success and it remained that way for more than seven decades. But in 1985, while under the ownership of the Sheraton Corporation, the Huntington had to be closed due to earthquake code violations. In 1987, the Ritz-Carlton Corporation purchased the property and, with a $100 million upgrade, brought it up to code. In 1990, the new Huntington Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Spa opened its doors to the public. Just this year, the hotel was sold yet again – this time to Great Eagle Holdings who renamed it the Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa. Even with all of the ownership changes, the Huntington remains the finest hotel in the Pasadena area. It also remains a favorite of both celebrities and location scouts alike.

In a large Beaux Arts building that was constructed in 1908, the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans attracts business travelers and tourists alike, thanks to its convenient location and high-end features. The internal courtyard gets lots of natural light, and includes large potted plants and trees along with several iron tables. It's also one of the few parts of the Ritz-Carlton where Wi-Fi is free (though the connection is not always reliable). The farm-to-table M Bistro and the Davenport Lounge bar are both popular with guests and locals alike, and there are live jazz performances several nights a week. The Ritz-Carlton also has an expansive reading room, with wood bookshelves, leather reading chairs, and red fabric couches - a classic design that almost makes you feel like you should be wearing a smoking jacket! Convenient location between the French Quarter and the Central Business District The Ritz-Carlton is ideally located on busy Canal Street, which separates the Central Business District from the French Quarter. This makes the hotel convenient for both business and leisure travelers. Bourbon Street is just a block away, and the city's convention center is about a 10-minute drive. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, and a number of tram lines run in the median on Canal Street (called the "neutral ground" by locals). The airport takes just under 20 minutes to reach by car, traffic permitting. Extra-large, regally designed rooms with iPod docks and minibars The rooms at the Ritz-Carlton are extra large, and regally and colorfully designed in deep blues, purples, and golds. Even the Standard Rooms are large enough for a desk, a reading chair, and a double or king bed, and there's plenty of extra floor space. Unusual for a chain hotel, minibars operate on the honor system and items are restocked as requested. Rooms come with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, and Wi-Fi is available for a fee. Large bathrooms have white marble tiling, shower/tub combos, and Asprey Purple Water toiletries. A farm-to-table restaurant, live jazz, a gigantic spa, and a state-of-the-art gym The hotel's popular M Bistro restaurant specializes in fresh farm-to-table cuisine, while the adjacent Davenport Lounge, the hotel's bar, often has live jazz performances. The Ritz-Carlton also has the largest spa in the city, along with an expansive fitness center full of recent-model cardio machines, weight equipment, free weights, and a small resistance pool. There are also a business center, a dedicated conference concierge, and 10 event rooms, the largest of which can accommodate receptions of up to 300 people.

The 878-room hotel is located in the L.A. Live center, also home to the smaller, 123-room Ritz-Carlton, many restaurants, a bowling alley, nightclub, Grammy museum, the Staples Center, and the Nokia Theatre. Just three blocks from the Los Angeles Convention Center, it stands to reason that the hotel attracts lots of business travelers. And while there’s enough for families to do, the hotel’s surrounding area is generally pretty desolate (except for during sports games or concerts at the neighboring Staples Center or Nokia Theater), and a car is needed to get pretty much anywhere in the city. That said, the J.W. Marriott at L.A. Live is sleek and tastefully decorated, with splashes of color to spice up the predominantly white rooms. The huge atrium-style lobby is inviting and looks modern, though not as modern and trendy as the nearby W Hollywood. And while it’s certainly a step up from a regular Marriott, as you would expect from the nicer J.W. chain, it falls short of being truly luxurious (like its neighbor the Ritz-Carlton, for example). In downtown L.A., which is pretty desolate (despite recent development) and far from most popular tourist destinations. Being in downtown Los Angeles is great if you’re going to a sports game at the Staples Center, a concert at the Nokia Theatre, or a business meeting at the Convention Center. In fact, the J.W. Marriott is the closest hotel (besides neighbor Ritz-Carlton) to all of these attractions. But otherwise, you won’t find much to do in the way of entertainment. The area is pretty desolate when no events are going on, and you will have to rent a car to get just about anywhere. There are nearby bars and restaurants, but they are mainly large chains. In the L.A. But be warned, having double beds makes the room feel smaller than it actually is, as you’re giving up floor space to fit two beds. But business travelers will appreciate the rooms’ thoughtful touches: well-placed electrical outlets and very comfortable desk chairs.

Do NOT Expect: To not get any exercise. Located in the heart of historic Montmartre, the hotel is accessed from Rue Lepic via a set of typically steep Montmartre stairs. A crowded hotel: there are only 5 suites. 18th century Time Travellers Caron de Beaumarchais*** Rates: Double bed overlooking the courtyard, 145 Euros, frontside larger rooms, 185 Euros Expect: To feel like you might have interrupted Beaumarchais as he is finishing his final act of “The Marriage of Figaro”. A rare piano forte of 1792, a card table that appears to have been abandoned mid play, a fireplace, music stand, candles and chandeliers recreate the atmosphere of a private townhouse in the time of Beaumarchais and Mozart. Something totally French. All 19 rooms reflect the taste of the art of living invented in Paris in the 18th century. One of the most central locations. If you like the trendy Marais, this is the place to stay (and you’re just minutes from the best Falafel in the world from the old Jewish quarter). Do NOT Expect: Breakfast to be included. But it is served until midday (quite rare with hotels) and costs 13 Euros extra. To find the rooms particularly large, the smallest rooms overlook the courtyard, and the top-floor rooms are very small, but have panoramic balcony views across the Right Bank. Hotel L’Amour**** Rates: Doubles start at 150 euros (reservations best done over the phone to choose a room theme) An untouristed 20-room theme hotel hiding in an undistinguished lane near the red-light district of Pigalle that was once a serviceable, pay-by-the hour establishment. Rooms adorned with romance novels, erotic art and old photo magazines. A good-looking hipster crowd and the surrounding charm of 9th arrondissement. Owned partly by the proprietors of the nightclub Le Baron (not that it should matter), the place has become a darling of the international fashion and rock ’n’ roll set. Phones, televisions or Internet access in the rooms (said to be too distracting for lovers. But there’s an iPod connection in every room and wireless Internet service in the public spaces). Groveling servants To feel like a tourist Luxury Beyond the Four Seasons Hotel Chain (that’s far less boring) L’Hotel **** Rates: Last minute offers for a “petite mignon” room from 250 Euros and a “chic’ room from 510 Euros.
